How much to price for a designer cupcake?

I'm working on a project for my hospitality and tourism class and i was curious as to how much you think i should price a gourmet cupcake would help.

I searched a bit and found $2.50 but are there any other ideas? or is that a good price? How much to price for a designer cupcake?
Location, professionalism, %26amp; popularity are the KEY factors into pricing!

Unless your a professional baker in NYC, Boston, LA, etc. and your name is 'out' there, I wouldn't charge anymore than $1.50. I understand that it's for a project, but as I mentioned, there are factors.

I personally wouldn't pay that much for a cupcake, unless there was a lot of stigma surrounding it just to see what all the hoopla is all about.
ummm well if its a class project and you're doing it for a grade by rights you shouldn't charge anything because you haven't told them they'd be able to buy the cupcakes so while you're doing your project most of them will probably not have the money on them in advance to pay

and I would figure out the cost of the ingrediants you used and divide that up by how many cupcakes you make to see how much one cupcake cost to make and then add a little profit to the priceHow much to price for a designer cupcake?
$2.50 is a good price for a cupcake. I know people who charge $4 for a gourmet cupcake, or start with a base price of $2 and then charge more for fancy decorations (gumpaste flowers, fondant, etc). In order to make any money selling cupcakes, you would need to have a minimum order, unless you had a shop where you sold a lot of cupcakes each day (very stressful to make your living one cupcake at a time!). Usually a minimum order of two dozen cupcakes is reasonable, because it's enough to cover your supplies and time. It would cost you as much to make one cupcake as it would to make a dozen, because a recipe that just made one cupcake wouldn't work, and you'd use the same amount of electricity turning on the oven for one cupcake as for a dozen.

There are people saying that the cupcake craze isn't going to last. http://www.slate.com/id/2227216/
It would really depend on your definition of gourmet and the cost of the ingredients you plan on using. You can really only base the cost of something like that upon how much it will cost you to make them. I've seen cupcakes range from $0.60 to $3.00. Consider looking at any of the cupcake places in NYC, most of them have websites.
At local fairs you could only charge about $1 - $1.50, but if you had a store then anywhere from $2 - $3 would be totally acceptable. People are ridiculous for how much they'll pay for a pretty-looking cupcake.
I agree $2.50 or $3.00, depending on how upscale the area is. (Beverly Hills or the Hamptons you could go $4.00).
