Are restaurants crowded on Christmas Eve?

For as long as I can remember, we have spent Christmas Eve at my grandma's house. She past away a few years ago, so the family doesn't get together that day anymore. I was thinking about taking my boys out to a nice dinner, but Saturday is the only evening we would be able to do it. I am just wondering if restaurants are extremely crowded that day? Or is the majority of people spending family time at home. I am talking about restaurants like Olive Garden, Apple Bee's, Eat N Park (Pittsburgh). If anyone has any experience of dining out on Christmas Eve...please share. Thanks in advance for reading. Are restaurants crowded on Christmas Eve?
Many restaurants close early on Christmas eve so you need to call and see what their hours are.

In my experience the restaurants that are open are busy but not like on Mothers Day or Valentines Day. Most people prefer to stay home with family.

My advice, if you are planning on a Christmas eve dinner you need to call ahead.
Yes because many restaurants are closed so the ones that are open are busier than usual plus this year it's Saturday. Applebees and Olive Garden don't take reservations but you can usually call and have your name put down on the waiting list. Make sure to arrive at least 5 minutes before the wait time. Are restaurants crowded on Christmas Eve?
