Neiman Marcus of Baked Goods.....Need clients?
Neiman Marcus of Baked Goods.?
I am running a start up gourmet bakery from home that has a variety of cookies, brownies, cakes, cupcakes and unique flavors and styles. I am word of mouth right now by way of a few clients. Should i have cake parties and dessert parties so people can place orders? I would like to keep my product exclusive, i.e. you can only get neiman marcus clothing types at neimans at not walmart, how do i do that. I want to be exclusive, any suggestions?
ThanksNeiman Marcus of Baked Goods.?
Investigate the local coffee shops in your area. Look for privately-owned, small businesses--not Starbucks.
Usually these small coffeehouses buy their baked goods from different local sources. Bring some samples and prices with you. You might get some clients that way.
Send some samples of your products to restaurants and specialty gourmet stores. If they love them, they will buy them to sell at their stores. This has worked for many people I know in the business.Neiman Marcus of Baked Goods.?
People need to be aware of your product. Cheesecake factory sells their cakes, pies, etc to Starbucks. You can try something like that. Good luck and tell us where you will be selling your products!!
I started bringing cakes at my current job for my coworkers to try. They loved them, so I started getting orders, especially during different holidays (TX-Giving, XMas, etc.).
Then I also made small samples for my mother's diner and people loved them and now ask for them. Now people are asking for wedding and birthday cakes!
To answer you question, start small by bringing samples to small diners, minimarkets and gas stations, then go to the "bigger guys" like restaurants, supermarkets, etc. That's what I am doing, selling to the "small guys" until I get all the equipment I need. It's a big investment, and you need to make sure you have a good marketing strategy so you can sell, sell, sell.

I want to open a pet store....?
Hey, so I've been thinking about what I wanted to do with my life... I'm 17 currently... I was thinking of becoming an animator... but then Id have to move to a totally different country and leave all my family and friends behind :(
All my life Ive Loved pets... especially dogs :P so I kinda had a brainstorm (Is that what you call it?): What If I opened a pet store... Like in a high class area in Toronto like the Shopping district or somewhere cool in toronto
And my pet store would be high end... Id sell like cute collars and coats and halloween costumes at winter time... Id sell those little gourmet treats and cupcakes and the store would look very classy and elegant... Now I know what your thinking... "dogs from pet stores come from puppy mills" and "theres already a million High-end pet stores"... but what will make this one different is I want to have 2 big screens on the wall One with Pictures and Bios of dogs in the local shelter and the other with pictures of cats at the local shelter... the customer could come in, pic a pet(S) and buy his supplyes and then go to one of the local shelters to pick up his pooch or feline
...is that a reasonable idea??? I would not be selling fish or hamsters...the only living creature in my store would be my own dog :P
I think its great because people wwho already have dogs can shop there or people who are looking for a dog can shop there AND save a pets life!
obviously I want to work hand in hand with 1 or more local shelters
On the front of the store I would advertise that you CAN buy a dog/cat at the store... they would come in thinking they will be getting some puppy mill dog when in fact their helping the shelter pups and cats :)I want to open a pet store....?
That's cute and all but the key to running a successful buisness is running a buisness. You having suggestions of other pets to buy it's good enough. You have to have some part that makes you money. Like having the Animals at your store (through an agreement with the shelter) or offering to pick up the animal, train and goom it for them. The best place to start is by getting a job at a pet store (don't tell them you want to be the competition) Then you can see what they do well and what you can do better.
Interesting business plan! I really like the big screen idea. But be careful about advertising you can "buy" a pet from your store, it's somewhat misleading and you could have some legal issues.
Now your next step is to attend a good business college.
good luck!I want to open a pet store....?
1. Business school, to learn the basics of entrepreneurship
2. Veterinary school, to learn the basics about animal health
I think it's a great idea! Don't go down the seling of animals route, a lot of pet shops don't give a hoot about the animals and when they are too old they drown them. I like your way of thinking, i volunteer for a no kill shelter and would never buy from a breeder. I have once bought from a pet shop, Cindy was a 5wk old x shepard pup, not weaned from mother, runt of the litter and in a small cage with 6siblings. I took her straight to the vet where he said she was malnourished and needed to be weaned by me.
Good luck
That's a great idea and hope you can make it come true. I would emphasize that you ONLY have puppies/kittens from local shelters and have them scheduled on routine days as "adoption" days - then on the store front have a list of the name of the shelter and when they will be there for adoption days.
You wouldn't have to move to a totally different country! There's a lot of very famous canadian animation companies with a lot of successful TV shows that I still watch.
That's a great idea! But instead of just having ads of pets in shelters and making people go there, how about taking the dog or cat over to your store after someone picks that pet and then giving it to them? Kinda like shipping it from the shelter to your store and to the house of the person who asked for it. Or you can get dogs from shelters and take them to your store, or just get your own shelter and also have collars and cute accessories!
But remember that you'll have to hire workers and pay for advertising and for all of the merchandise, which costs a lot of money! Plus electricity and just renting a store. If you don't get any customers, you'll have to close shop, so go to lots of different neighborhoods where practically everyone has a dog, so you'll get a lot of customers.
Good luck!

Does anyone have Spa Party Ideas or decorations for a beauty facial graduate?
I have a friend who graduated as an esthetician, not to be confused with "Beauty School." No hair and nails are involved because she only does facials. Her husband asked to use our house to plan a surprise Graduation party for 20-25 people. We have a big house so I was thinking to have it indoors and since she might work at a Spa, maybe I can decorate round tables with WHITE linen, CANDLES and fresh ROSE PEDALS around the tables. Silver streamers hanging from the chandeliers and walls. I want to have a Spa feel to it. Finger foods, gourmet sandwiches, cupcakes, chocolate covered strawberries, wine and mixed drinks. It鈥檚 just a surprise Graduation party. And men will be invited (our friend鈥檚 husbands). Any other ideas you can think of?Does anyone have Spa Party Ideas or decorations for a beauty facial graduate?
Make some natural facials. You can:
(1) Take 2 handfuls of oatmeal (cannot be instant) and a cup of plain yogurt. Leave it on your face for 15 minutes.
(2) Papaya scrub. Take half a papaya, smush it into a paste, and leave on face for 10 minutes.
(3) Banana facial. Take a smushed banana and a teaspoon of honey, mush it, and leave on your face for 10 minutes.
Have fun and don't eat the facials! I tried eating the 1st one once and it tasted so bad LOL.

Well these aren't big gift ideas, but here are a couple of extra things you can give him that are cheap. They're "guy" things. Books from amazon on travel, adventure and sailing. They can be downloaded directly to his computer and he'll get a gift email from you telling him what you've given him.
The 1st book is free thru Christmas as a promotion/gift. It's about a guy who didn't know how to sail who bought a boat and sailed around the world. The 2nd book is about things every sailor needs.

Does anybody have some good ideas for a Sip and See party?
I am throwing my best friend a Sip and See party for her and her new baby. Our theme is "angel". We have decided on finger foods, mimosas, flowers, a tip jar, and cupcakes. Is there anything else that we are forgetting? Any ideas to make it a cuter party? All ideas are welcome. Also, should we give little guest presents (like gourmet cookies) to guests as they leave?Does anybody have some good ideas for a Sip and See party?
are you really sure that you want to have mimosas at a baby shower- I understand that no one else is pregnant but being someone that just had a baby shower not long ago it's almost like she will be feeling left out. i know i would. other than that it sounds like your shower will be a good time. you should also give something to the guests as they leave the cookies sound like a good idea.

Why can't I sell my cupcakes?
Okay. So I live in a small town in Central California. I am trying to get my cupcake business off the ground, and it's proving to be very challenging!!!!! You see, I bake the best, gourmet cupcakes this side of Los Angeles, and no one wants to pay the money I'm asking! I've compared my pricing with close surrounding areas, not so close surrounding areas, and also the East Coast, where I purchased a dozen cupcakes for $30!!! Yes, this may sound expensive, but it's not just the cupcakes - it's the experience that you get while eating those wonderful, gorgeous looking edible works of art!
Folks in this town seem to be content to just go to the local grocery store or "big box" membership store, and buy those heavy, grease laden hockey pucks they call cupcakes. Mine are bursting with flavor, light, and made with the BEST ingredients possible, and my packaging is beautiful! I'm only charging $24.50 for a dozen, and $14.75 for a half dozen. There is definitely a market here, but competing with the $5.99/dozen grocery store brand and the $10/for 2 dozen "big box" store brand is killing me. Should I just give up??!!??!!?? I've been at this for over a year now, and I get an order here and there, but nothing consistent. I've supplied cupcakes for various occasions at work, with glowing, rave reviews.
Am I to come to the conclusion that these people are just cheap tightwads? I'm really passionate about this, and it's just not happening. Any suggestions? Why can't I sell my cupcakes?
first advertise your *** off, seconder advertise them at 2 dollars per cup cake, it sounds A LOT cheaper. and you might have 2 cut your prices. like i KNOW it dosnt cost you 2 dollars to make a cup cake, drop your prices, it might not be what you want to do, but selling 100 cup cakes a day with only a 15% profit margin is still better then selling 5 a day with a 30% margin. and try and maybe sell more then just cup cakes. not everyone wants a cup cake when their in the mood for something sweet. and i don't mean 2 be harsh, but if u can only make cup cakes, then your in the wrong business. u gotta be able 2 do alot of things, and meat your customers needs, and wants.
In this economy, people are not going to pay that price for cupcakes. Your product would sell if it was the 90's. No matter how gourmet or beautifully packed they are, cupcakes are just not worth that price! For 30 dollars I can buy organic fruit and vegetables to last a week or more. Cupcakes are just not that important. Why can't I sell my cupcakes?
there will always be some idiots who will buy your product at those high prices. i agree you have wonderful ingredients in yours and they look like works of art. but real people who are not trendy or just plain stupid won't be buying your product. you know who they are and where they live.
bake good tasty muffins, price them near their cost of production. advertise them and they will sell.
honey i hate to break it to ya but that IS expensive for some cupcakes! 24.50?!?!? wow! never in my life! try lowering your price and see what happens! look this is how i see it its better than selling cupcakes for a lower price than selling no cupcakes at all! :) good luck hun!
You are learning all about economics. You can price your products 25 -50% above local prices, but 400% won't work. Sorry, but you are just too expensive.
stop thinking about customers as tightwads. that might be a good place to start.

Girl Gourmet cupcake recipe?
Does anyone have any ideas as to a recipe that would be suitable to use with the Girl Gourmet Cupcake maker? i.e. in the microwave for 30 secs? Am trying to decide whether to get this for my sisters for xmas but I know we wont be able to afford to keep buying the refills....Girl Gourmet cupcake recipe?
The gourmet cupcake maker doesn't actually make the cupcake, it has an attachment for frosting the cupcakes. The mix that they use is designed to microwave for 30 seconds to bake the cupcakes. Then they have a separate mix for the frosting which you use with the attachment. You could make any type of cupcake in the microwave or oven and then use whatever frosting you would like.

How much would you pay for a homemade cupcake?
I will be selling gourmet cupcakes at a holiday Boutique...If you were a customer at the Holiday Boutique, which is like a themed farmers market...how much would you pay? I am in California, if that makes any difference. How much would you pay for a homemade cupcake?
1$
Considering your market consists of people in middle/upper class, and your cupcakes are high quality and middle sized, I'd go $3 for an individual, maybe 1/2 dozen for 15 dozen 25?How much would you pay for a homemade cupcake?
I've payed from $1.50-$3.00
I think $2.00 would be best
but they were pretty big cupcakes :)
*Edit*
then about $1.50 I guess
How big is this cupcake?
If it's normal size i would pay up to $2
Large size i will pay up to $4
if it's small you better sell them 2 for $1
If they are fancy, which I am assuming they are since it says "gourmet", how about $1? If they are plain, 50 or 75 cents. If they are very fancy maybe even $1.50.
$1 a cupcake
yeah raise the price to two dollars since they're made in california :p
$2
i live in Connecticut
$1
1.00
$1.50
$1.50
$1.00
$1
most id pay is 5 dollars it would have to be big and look good
A dollar. :D
i'd give you a shiny nickel... :}

Any great cupcake recipes?
My boyfriend has a MAJOR sweet tooth %26amp; loves cupcakes. I want a great cupcake recipe (maybe something filled or a little on the "gourmet" side!) to make since his birthday is coming up in a few weeks. Any ideas?
(He totally loved a shop in Austin, TX called Hey Cupcake, but we live about 15 hours away from there %26amp; no bakery around here compares - otherwise I'd just order some!)Any great cupcake recipes?

dulce de leche cupcakes!!
Go to cooks.com they have lots of stuff there!
Bittersweet chocolate cupcakes
Here is one of my favorite cupcakes. A pinch of cinnamon adds interest and warmth
More like individual flourless chocolate cakes, these cupcakes would make a sophisticated dessert for a dinner party. They are delicate and may crumble on top, but don鈥檛 worry, since they're served upside 鈥?down with a glaze spread over them.
Ingredients
24 ounces bittersweet [not unsweetened] or semisweet chocolate, chopped
5 large eggs
3 large egg yolks
1 cup sugar
scant teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup whipping cream
1/2 stick unsalted butter, cut into pieces
Method
Preheat oven to 375掳
Lightly butter eighteen 1/3-cup muffin cups
Stir 16 ounces chopped bittersweet chocolate in top of double boiler set over simmering water until melted and smooth. Cool slightly. Using electric mixer, beat eggs, egg yolks and sugar in large bowl until pale yellow and tripled in volume, about 5 minutes. Add melted chocolate and beat until blended. Divide cupcake batter equally among prepared muffin cups, filling cups about 3/4 full.
Bake cupcakes until puffed and cracked on top, about 12 minutes. Cool to room temperature. Run knife around sides of muffin cups to loosen cupcakes, then carefully lift out with small metal spatula. Place chocolate cupcakes upside down on work surface.
Bring whipping cream to simmer in small saucepan. Remove from heat. Add remaining 8 ounces chopped chocolate and unsalted butter; whisk until melted and smooth. Cool until slightly thickened and spreadable. Spread glaze over cakes. [Can be prepared 8 hours ahead. Store in airtight container at room temperature.]
Serve cupcakes glaze side up
I make this in cake form all the time, and everyone loves it. Don't put too much batter in the muffin cups so there's enough room for the sauce. You may want to use the metal muffin cups so it doesn't soak into the muffin cup. I generally double the icing. If there's some left over, spoon it over some vanilla ice cream.

Is this enough food variety for a desert reception?
i went to my caterer today %26amp; she keeps giving me different answers, then i saw pictures of some of the events she'd catered %26amp; let's say i was so not impressed, then when she said she'd never done a wedding before, i just canceled her. i live in a rural area so there is no other caterer around here.
but since it's a desert reception mom said we could make it, i don't work, i have taken culinary arts %26amp; catering classes in the past, my mom, my aunt %26amp; my mom's best friend said they'd help too so this is what i have on the menu
lemon squares
mini strawberry cheesecakes
cookies
belgian mini cream puffs
mini eclairs
mini turtle cheesecake
chocolate brownies truffles
cupcakes (instead of cake)
gourmet brownies
with milk, desert wine, champagne, water %26amp; coffee to drink
what do you think? does that work out or do i need more variety,
milk is mainly for the 8 kids that will be there, the adults attending don't drink pop, they are big coffee drinkers, my parents only drink water, his parents only drink wine %26amp; coffee, so we don't really need soda, beer isn't a good idea, his brother drinks beer like water.
thank you.Is this enough food variety for a desert reception?
Sounds pretty good to me ^_^
Something else you might enjoy are oreo truffles. Those things are so good, and (depending on size) they can garnish 70-140 little truffles. You can drizzle the chocolate to make them gourmet-ish too. They're always a hit anywhere I go and take them.
http://www.kraftfoods.com/kf/recipes/eas鈥?/a>
and don't worry about the spelling, I get them mixed up too at times LoL(Sometimes I just say sweets/pastry bar:) We're all human and have a few flubs ^_~
I'm so glad I could help, Congratulations ^_^
i typically have around 15 different items on a desert buffet. you should consider adding some candies perhaps. also, see if you can buy some of these items. they probably wont' be as expensive as you expect and also will save you time and effort during an already stressful time. check with local bakeries or pastry shops. that way, all you'll have to do is have someone pickup and set up the display
you're planning on 4 of each item for each guest? I think that will be sufficient.
Make sure you stash the cupcakes until the 'cake cutting' deal (if you're doing the 'feed me' thing)
Figure out what you can make in advance and freeze/refrigerate... you will have so much on your mind, make sure you delegate!
Congrats%26amp; best wishes
Just another idea... Im doing a dessert only reception as well and we are also renting an ice cream cart! The places we have found charge around $100 and it comes filled with the ice cream bars of your choice. I really thought this was a great way to round off our sweets only menue. We also added fresh fruit for the dieters. lol
That sounds perfect.... how about adding some chocolate covered strawberries!!
Uh, you could rent a fountain (or buy one from like Kmart, a small one) and have some strawberries and some jumbo marshmallows surrounding the fountain of chocolate... how beautiful!!! and yummy!!
That sounds like a good variety. I would plan for more than 4 different things for each person though. Many will eat four and others will eat more. You can always find a place for the food that is left.
Good plan! I wish you the best.
Mmmmmm!! Can I come? I would absolutely LOVE to go to a wedding reception like this.
Yes, I do think you have plenty, but I would add some fruit (as you already said you would be doing in your edit.)
So, other than the fruit....it's all good! Yummy.
Sounds great, can I come? Congrats.
My favorite thing to have with dessert is hot tea, but I don't know if you have any tea drinkers in your crowd. Doesn't seem to be very popular in the US, everyone is into coffee.
if you invite me i could bring date squares, meringues, and sex-in-a-pan! lol
it sounds like a lovely selection sweetie....you don't need to add a single thing......wishing you a very happy wedding!
I think that's a really good variety. Maybe have a sugar free option for some of the diabetes. A chocolate fountain would be cool too.
That looks really good to me - great variety, should make everyone happy.
Sounds good to me. Have lots of milk b/c even as an adult the best thing after chocolate is milk! Maybe have tea for those tea-drinkers and some kind of juice/pop
I looked at this question because I was curious as to what a desert reception was, Im dissapointed now.
Dessert sounds great!
Yum I wish I was invited!
Congratulations
sounds perfectly alright to me
I'm all about desserts, and your menu looks wonderful. Enjoy!
That seems like a good variety to me!
yes! thats sounds GREAT :)
Have a little variety of wine. You said dessert wine? Perfect but be sure to have a decent red and white available for those who enjoy it. Also...since you won't have soda, how about iced tea? Some people won't want wine and some don't want coffee. Iced tea is a nice alternative.
The selection of treats is perfect but add in a large fruit tray. Think about those watching their waistline or possibly have an allergy to items made with eggs, sugar, etc...
You could include melted chocolate in small ceramic pots over tea lights to keep it warm and possibly another fruit dip made with yogurt, honey and toasted coconut.
Have small plates available and plenty of toothpicks/skewers ready for people to pick.
That is a good selection, but the question now becomes amount. You don't want to risk the dessert that everyone loves running out after the first 10 people. I would actually have fewer of the different options - having both cream puffs and eclairs seems redundant, as with having both brownies and the chocolate brownies truffles.
If you're serving small pieces, which is what this sounds like from the number of squares listed, then you want to assume that each guest will have 2-4 squares. Double that for young men, or really young children who will just love the sweets you're making. Make sure you have more than that total amount, because no one wants to feel that they're taking the last piece.
If any of those are going to be a real big hit, try to have 1.5- 2 of them per person who can eat them. i.e. everyone really loves your brownies, you're inviting 100 people, and 10 of them are allergic to the nuts you put in the brownies. At that point you want to have 135 - 180 brownies. They can be small (make 90 and cut them in half), but this way everyone will get one of them.
i would also do a punch type drink
do you have a sams club? if so get there pastries or go to a local bakery or store bakery
sams has mini assorted cheesecakes a box of like 80pc for 14.99
they also have the cream puffs and mini eclairs
i would do doughnut holes ( get them at a dunken dougnuts and assort them on a plate)
fudge all diffrent kinds you can make them the day before and cut them the day of
i would do a cookie basket and a brownie basket with diffrent kinds of each
also if you can i would do some icecream to go with some of the desserts also look into mini pies
magic bars, lemon bars, things in that nature they can be done a day or two in advance and hold well
also a chocolate fountain
you can get a bunch of diffrent types of cake and have people dip it in the fountain also some fresh fruits too
but since it's a desert reception mom said we could make it, i don't work, i have taken culinary arts %26amp; catering classes in the past, my mom, my aunt %26amp; my mom's best friend said they'd help too so this is what i have on the menu

At that point you want to have 135 - 180 brownies. They can be small (make 90 and cut them in half), but this way everyone will get one of them.
i would also do a punch type drink
do you have a sams club? if so get there pastries or go to a local bakery or store bakery
sams has mini assorted cheesecakes a box of like 80pc for 14.99
they also have the cream puffs and mini eclairs
i would do doughnut holes ( get them at a dunken dougnuts and assort them on a plate)
fudge all diffrent kinds you can make them the day before and cut them the day of
i would do a cookie basket and a brownie basket with diffrent kinds of each
also if you can i would do some icecream to go with some of the desserts also look into mini pies
magic bars, lemon bars, things in that nature they can be done a day or two in advance and hold well
also a chocolate fountain
you can get a bunch of diffrent types of cake and have people dip it in the fountain also some fresh fruits too
Whats the biggest piece 'o crap present you got your kid this year?
Im going with the "Gourmet Girl Cupcake Maker".
Not like the Easy Bake Oven of the 70s, I could bake a pot pie in that thing. And the frosting mechanism, jeeesh, looks like something my dog did.Whats the biggest piece 'o crap present you got your kid this year?
i'd reserve judgment until we bust open the rose art plastic pottery wheel.....Whats the biggest piece 'o crap present you got your kid this year?
What's a frosting "mechanism"?

Is this a good monthiversary present?
I was thinking of getting him a cupcake (one of those like...gourmet one) and having the decorators write our names together with a heart, and a 5.14.10 (the day we started going out) on the bottom. Is that a good present? Or stupid?
And GUYS: what would you want?Is this a good monthiversary present?
No, your idea of the fancy cup cake is adorable ! Maybe you can find one of those cute musial cards and a big balloon to go with it.
So happy I could help ! Thanks hanna !
aw, that's cute.
It depends how long you've been going out. When we were 24-26, my bf gave me my favorite flowers and favorite food (artichokes) for our one month. Then some simple gold plated jewelry for our 2 months.
I'd say yes to the cupcake, or possibly to buy him his favorite snack in bulk. I did that once and my bf at the time loved it. It was a casefull of chocolate pudding :)
...A "month-iversary" present? Seriously? Ugh...
Made a cupcake yourself -- if you MUST celebrate it -- and give it to him. Forget the day thing, just a freakin' cupcake, no fancy stuff.
For pete's sake... if it was like an anniversary thing, I'd say go all out and get a cake, but a month?!
For 2 years my BF and I have done this. Our 2 year anniversary is next week and we are simply going to see Eclipse. But for months usuall we buy things like a video game, or something simple like DVDs and stuffed animals. One month I bought him a tie and a new belt. He loved it!
look i am no guy but i think its a little cheeseyy!!! but maybe you could get his fav food and add chocolate with it to make it cute and yummy!!

You would have to have a lot of advertising and stuff to make it successful because there are so many pet stores already! Maybe if you did grooming for the dogs too, and like a pet sitting service, as well as the pet store and all of that, it may workout better. People are always looking for a grooming place to bring their pet!
the only problem I can see with this is the fact someone could end up going to the shelter and being denied the animal they wish to adopt. A better idea is to work with your local shelters/rescues and host adoption days and providing a small discount to those who adopt that day.I want to open a pet store....?
What a good idea. You can start right now by volunteering at your local shelter. Maybe you could help them by coming up with new ways to advertise or help with special events or even just raise awareness. It never hurts to build relationships now that may help you years down the road.
Aim for the stars, kiddo. And for the love of God, USE SPELL CHECK!! No business owner should have the spelling and grammer skills as you have.
This:
"On the front of the store I would advertise that you CAN buy a dog/cat at the store... they would come in thinking they will be getting some puppy mill dog when in fact their helping the shelter pups and cats"
Is a BAD idea. Don't do that.
Stay in school!
I definetley think it's a good start. I love that you would market adoption rather than purchasing. I would look into the system that Petco and Petsmart have. They house cats from local shelters in their facility and host adoption events for the dogs on weekends. That way, people could still have the fun of seeing the pets directly in the store.
Another suggestion I have is looking into "education animals". I know an amazing exotics pet store that has TONS of customers because of it's "education animals". Basically, the place runs like a mini wildlife sanctuary. They only sell legal "exotics" like birds, rodents, fish and small reptiles, but they house a number of animals confiscated from humane investigations. For example, the place has a huge rock exhibit with giant tortoises. I'm not encouraging you to sell exotics, but I always thought the educational animals were a great idea. They're animals that wouldn't have a home without the place, and I know lots of people who buy from there just because they love visiting all the critters!
Keep in mind that at this time, independent pet stores are struggling to keep up with the big chains, like Petco, Petsmart and Petland. Don't assume you'll open the place and people will just start pouring in. You have to find out what YOU can offer that the big chains can't. Why will people visit your store instead of Petco?
I'd suggest you take lots of business and marketing classes. Good luck!
i think it is a great idea ... people spend more money on their animals than they do on their kids ... and in toronto, it is so pet friendly, i think it is a great idea ... i live in vancouver and there is a woman with a small boutique and she does what you have posted, posts pictures and bios of dogs in local shelters ... but one weekend a month the shelter people come to her store with the dogs advertised and people can adopt in their own neighbourhood ... when i lived in ottawa, there was another pet store downtown that sold shelter dogs and cats too ... i think it is a great idea :O)
yes i love the idea, especially the idea with the tvs and the shelter , because there are so many animals that are good and nice and cute in shelters that no one gets and the animal becomes euthanized or sits in the shelter for a long time. I would also try and do as many kill shelters as possible because they are the ones who need to the most because if they dont find a home in a certain amount of time they get put to rest and dont have a chance at a second life. I think this is a amazing idea and it seems you have a big heart. Maybe if your pet store gets big enough you can open other ones in different places. One more thing i would add is that you should also have like once a week people come into your store from shelters and bring a few animals that need a home the most and try to find them a home in your store. good luck and dont give up your idea. its a great idea.

Small, decorative cakes?
I would really love to find some recipes for little gourmet cakes (not cupcakes--:x) Something like these: http://www.potatomato.com/mt/archives/im鈥?/a>
Just recipes for tiny, pretty tea-(ish) cakes. That's all I need. And yet I can't seem to find any, anywhere! :'(
The kind of thing you might see Sebastian serving to Ciel Phantomhive from the anime Kuroshitsuji, for example. It's ok if you don't know what I'm talking about. But if you do, and you love it just like me, hey, pump one of those fists in the air for me! XD
Thank you very much in advance!!Small, decorative cakes?
I think you're talking about what is called petit fours. They are like little cakes in one bite. There is no reason you can't use a favorite cake recipe or mix, but you may need a special pan. Either that or make a whole sheet cake then cut it into the proper sized little squares. That's not the hard part.
The hard part is the frosting and the decorating.
Most hobby stores which sell the supplies also offer classes. I'm thinking Michael's, Hobby Lobby.....Small, decorative cakes?
Try searching for recipes using the French name for these: petit fours

Something to cook/make my boyfriend?
I already made a gourmet chocolate cupcake for him, I was wondering what else I could make... something easy. I was thinking maybe cookies but I feel it's a bit too elementary.
Pictures would really help, too. Thanks so much! %26lt;3.Something to cook/make my boyfriend?
Premium Pizza Crust
OVERNIGHT COLD RISE METHOD: In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Stir in 2 cups of flour and salt; mix well. Stir in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and supple, about 15 minutes. Place dough in bowl dusted with flour cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
How about a Strawberry Cream Cheese Pie? here is a link for the recipes..enjoy..=)Something to cook/make my boyfriend?
You can impress him with homemade pizza! That is always a winner at my house. You can check out pictures and recipes for desserts on my baking blog...

Birthday gift for someone who has everything?
My boss turns 26 on Saturday and I want to do something for her at work :)
We always do something for each others birthdays. Mine was in December and they forgot it was the 22nd, so on the 23rd they went nuts and bought me a gourmet cupcake, ordered me flowers, and let me pick lunch ;) Haha
She has everything- For christmas she got a Nordstrom's gift card but I really hate gift cards- they show the exact amount you spend :/
I have baked an apple cake for the last couple occasions because my bosses both love it, but I am getting tired of always being the person who bakes something hahaha..
any suggestions?
For my other boss for christmas, part of her gift was web design for her dog kennel. My other boss has a kennel too but she may not be interested in that sort of thing.Birthday gift for someone who has everything?
I'd go with the apple cake again. She likes it. Don't sweat this kind of thing.
You're boss has a dog? Maybe you should get her and her dog cute matching sweaters. That would be cute. I think a great gift would be a bubble bath and lotion set. I love those! Or maybe a picture frame with a picture of you and all of your co-workers would be cute and nice. Or maybe jewlery? All women like jewlery. I'm sure that whatever you get your boss, she'll love it because it's always the thought that counts :)Birthday gift for someone who has everything?
i always think the best gifts are personal ones, not expensive ones. i remember the episode of the office where Jim gave Pam a teapot (because she wanted one) but he filled it with items that reminded her of inside jokes. you could try something like that, but use something else instead of the teapot. fill whatever it is with pictures, tokens, any small object that reminds you of an incident.
hope this helps

What is a gift I could give to my boy choir director?
I have a Junior High Concert coming up this Thursday and since I am president I am in charge of the speech and presents to present at the concert. We have two directors a man and a woman. The Woman director is the head director and we are getting her a pretty bouquet of flowers and a her favorite gourmet cupcake. The other is a the assistant director and we are getting him his favorite cupcake and...? No Ties- those are tacky. Our Directors are AMAZING. It can't get any better than them. The are so devoted to what they do and always puts us first. For our choir concert we are doing an MJ Tribute and Glee! So they are quite modern. I have no clue what to get him. For you men... What is equivalent to flowers? That does not need to be ordered. What is a gift I could give to my boy choir director?
If you could do a CD of you singing, I think that would mean the most.

Is it bad to have a 'cheat/treat day' once a week?
I'm no longer trying to lose weight, just eat healthfully and maintain my weight.
I workout 5 days a week, and I like to take two consecutive days off (usually friday/ sat or sat/sun). I'm working on trying to build muscle.
So to maintain my weight I need 1500-1700 calories a day (I'm 5'0, 95lbs. I like to have around 1600 because although on some days this might not be enough depending on my exercise, on others it might be too much, so it balances out.
However, on Saturday usually, I like to have a day where I can just let loose and not worry so much about healthy eating. It's stressful trying to do things right at birthday parties and when I'm out on a day-trip with the family, and at 16, I'd like to enjoy myself.
Today, for example...
For breakfast I had two organic whole wheat waffles with a bit of no sugar added maple syrup and half a banana. I had to take an antibiotic for my tooth infection around 11, so I had a small bowl of cereal (the pharmacist said I absolutely must eat with them and drink 1 or 2 glasses of water). For lunch I had a homemade veggie burger (they're small and about 70cals) in a whole wheat tortilla with some lettuce and tzatziki along with some sweet potato fries. For dinner I was at a birthday party, so I had a small slice of cheese pizza, a bit of pasta salad, and some salad with a tiny bit of balsamic dressing. Then they had these fancy gourmet chocolate cupcakes that were really rich, and I had a little square of ice cream cake.
Next weekend I have another birthday party at an Indian restaurant (but there will be cake, and it's for a friend who gets mad when I don't want chocolate or ice cream or something) and the following weekend I'm out on a trip.
obviously every saturday isn't this terrible, but is it really bad for me to do this once a week? Am I going to get fat doing this?
Thanks! Is it bad to have a 'cheat/treat day' once a week?
When you said you wanted a cheat day, I thought you meant you were going to spend the whole day gorging on bad food, not giving yourself a treat! Your eating plan sounds perfect for any day!
It sounds like you have a very well worked out routine. You are eating well and doing plenty of exercise. I am sure that it is fine to have a treat day where you allow yourself to be more relaxed about food. The amount of exercise you're doing will burn off plenty of calories so you shouldn't get fat.
I saw your other question about looking young for your age, but I was too late to answer. I did a study on height and I know that being short often makes it hard to look your age. I have a load of advice and tips on how to look older, curvier or whatever you want- you can mail me through my profile if you would like more info.Is it bad to have a 'cheat/treat day' once a week?
Any surplus will add on to your weight. You could eat in a small deficit all week and then make up those calories on the last day if you'd like.
Yes! That's excellent to let yourself have a a junk food or a treat once a week, it'll prevent you from bingeing on it later on. Having it once a week is better than having five times that in a day, or eating it straight for a week.professor layton bubble pop

Cooked or uncooked Buttercream icing....?
So I'm wanting to make gourmet type cupcakes but I'm very new to the baking and making of the ingredients part of it all. I was being trained at a very high end Bakery to be a cake decorator so I can handle that part of it but the only icings I actually have made are chocolate ganache and whipped cream icings. I'm trying to come up with a good buttercream recipe but I'm noticing that there are 2 different types of butter cream recipes out there. Cooked and uncooked. I made an uncooked buttercream but it was so sweet it ended up tasting like a store bought buttercream icing. Just kind of gross. So the question is which recipe would head me in the right direction?
Also I used the McCormick mint extract when trying to make some mint buttercream and it gave the flavor of spearmint gum rather then yummy mint flavored butterceam. Any recommendations?Cooked or uncooked Buttercream icing....?
1:2:2 recipe. 1 lb egg whites, 2 lbs sugar, 2 lbs butter. Mix the sugar and whites, place over a pot of hot water on the stove. Stir every once and a while, you are cooking the mixture, when the sugar has melted and the liquid is clear and smooth, pour it into a mixing bowl. Whisk until cool. Cut the butter in to small pieces and slowly add to the meringue mixture. ( the mix will look like it is going to crack - split - but it is ok keep mixing it and you will get a nice white butter cream.
Flavour wise just add a drop or two of pepermint flavour (if that is what you want.) If need be add another drop but it is easier to add some more that to try and take some out. Good Luck

Here is a recipe for the cooked Buttercream frosting. In my younger days I used it to make a Bassinet cake for a baby shower that served 48 people. The cake turned out perfect and the frosting tasted like custard - not sweet at all. In fact, it was so good, a woman at the shower was eating the frosting off the styrofoam bassinet hood with a spoon!! To decorate with it, be sure to put the cooked portion through a sieve to remove any lumps. This is from my cookbook called "Decorating Cakes and Party Foods Baking Too! by Louise Spencer:
BUTTERCREAM FROSTING
1 c milk
1/4 c unsifted, all-purpose flour
1 c butter at room temperature
1 c granulated sugar (yes granulated)
2 tsp vanilla
Combine milk and flour in small saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture boils and thickens. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Cream butter and sugar until very fluffy. Add vanilla and cooled flour mixture. Continue to beat at medium speed until frosting is very fluffy and sugar is completely dissolved.
CAUTION: IF buttercream is to be used for tube work, (borders, etc.), flour and milk mixture should be rubbed through a wire strainer before it is added to creamed butter and sugar. Yield: 3 cups; enough to frost, fill and border a 9" cake.
NOTE: This is the best tasting buttercream I have every used, a favorie of my family and students alike. I hope you will try it.Cooked or uncooked Buttercream icing....?
Butter Cream Frosting
2 sticks of butter, softened
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3-4 tablespoons milk
With an electric mixed whip butter until creamy; add powdered sugar, lemon juice and vanilla. Combine until well mixed. Add milk by the tablespoonful until desired constancy is reached.
For chocolate:
Melt 2 squares of semi-sweet baking chocolate and add to the sugar butter mixture before adding milk. Then add milk by the tablespoonful until desired constancy is reached.
By using lemon juice you eliminate the need for salt and it also cuts down on the sweetness of the frosting - I have been doing it this way for years and everybody loves my frosting.
ccoked buttercream tastes better but its impossible to decorate with...to decrease the sweatness use half butter half crisco and increase the vanilla extract just a little...have fun
Buttercream Icing
2 cups butter or margarine
2 cups sifted confectioners sugar
2/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
2 large egg whites
1/2 cup sifted confectioners sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup confectioners sugar
Place butter in mixing bowl, add 2 cups confectioners sugar, mix at low speed to obtain smooth paste. Whip at medium speed, adding the sweetened condensed milk slowly and gradually until light and fluffy.
Using a very clean bowl and beater, whip the egg whites until stiff while adding the 1/2 cup confectioners sugar slowly. Mix this meringue slowly into the above butter mixture. Add vanilla extract and remaining 1/2 cup confectioners sugar. This last amount of sugar can be doubled if stiffer icing is desired.
NOTE: Best results are obtained when butter and sugar are at room temperature and egg whites and milk are cold out of the refrigerator.
Go to the wilton web site. It is an uncooked buttercream and I enjoy the taste of it.ps lucky you I wish I knew how to decorate a cake the way the pros do.You probably should have used the peppermint extract instead of the mint.

Any other ideas you can think of?Does anyone have Spa Party Ideas or decorations for a beauty facial graduate?
i would have tv trays around the room with some dark brown baskets with Turquoise or white towels rolled in them
make some spa water 6 cups chilled still spring or mineral water
12 thin slices cucumber
4 thin slices lemon
4 sprigs (each 2 in. long) fresh mint, slightly crushed
2 sprigs (each 2 in. long) fresh rosemary, slightly crushed
Preparation
In a 2- to 2 1/2-quart pitcher, combine water, cucumber, lemon, mint, and rosemary. Serve, or cover and chill at least 2 hours or up to 8 hours. Add ice cubes just before serving.
Candles! Lots of candles and soft lighting. Candles create a tranquil atmosphere... a cozy, peaceful setting.
Fresh fruit and vegetables trays are perfect for a Spa Food spa party. Add some delicious creamy or zesty dips for the vegetables and chocolate fondue, whipped yogurt or caramel dips for the fruit.
Cheese trays and shrimp rings are also excellent choices. Make them up yourself or order them from your local deli.
For those of you who can afford it, hire a professional or two to come in and do massages, facials, manicures and/or pedicures. Nowadays there are even mobile spas available in a lot of cities.Does anyone have Spa Party Ideas or decorations for a beauty facial graduate?

Our world is becoming more complex as each day passes. Natural no longer has the same meaning as it once did, and with the current rules in listing ingredients, a "Natural Diet" could be filled with toxic chemicals.

French project: cupcake store?
In my french class we have to run a mini restaurant or bakery presentation complete with food, menus, slogan, name and a presentation about your store. I am having a gourmet cupcake bakery and soda bar. I'm not very advanced in french and I am in an 'academically advanced' school for grade 8, and I am good at giving presentations and all of the visual parts but I need a name. Something that sounds good in french and is short. A name I like in English is 'sprinkles' but sadly it sounds bad in french. Any ideas?French project: cupcake store?
Nuit Bleu.
When Americans went to make a movie in France they needed NIGHT scenes; they shot them during the day, using BLUE filters. Ever since the French have this term 'nuit Americaine', Francois Truffaut even used that as the title of a movie.
Cupcakes are an American invention, not French. So a name with a hidden American reference in it seems apt. If you explain it (or your teacher GETS it) it might score you a few %26lt;giggle%26gt; BROWNIE points.
Should your teacher point out that cupcakes are not French; tell teach that croissants are not French either! Croissants were invented in Vienna, Austria, on the occasion of a Turkish siege of the city ending. The croissant crescent shape is meant to represent the crescent on the Turkish flag!

Thanks! Just making the menu for the kid table at my Christmas party! What desserts are good for kids aged 3-11?
I would have a fruit tray with dipping sauce (caramel and chocolate)- maybe even a chocolate fountain.
I would also have a cookie bar- sugar cookies in Christmas shapes with various icings (white, red, green), sprinkles, etc. that they can decorate the cookies with.

Also you can do chocolate dipped marshmallows or maybe some little petit fours desserts. those are so good because they are small finger size servings and you can buy a box of them with variety of different kinds of cakes/desserts. There is also mini fruit tarts that kids love because the fruit is glazed and its so delicious.
Having a slew of kids around, I will tell you....kids do not "do" fancy. They do not appreciate the hard work of fancy food. They like chocolate, they like icecream. They like anything they can grab with a hand and ram it into their faces. Top three- icecream sandwiches, brownies, chocolate chip cookies. Oh, or peanut butter fudge.
All...lol

I am 17 and I have no clue what I want as a career!?
I'm really interested in owning my own business. I love music, fashion, baking and interacting with people! I love the idea of being a fashion stylist and being able to dress people for TV shows, films, music videos, photoshoots, etc. I love the idea of owning my own music venue where local and big names could play shows (not sure if I'd want liquor allowed there). I love the idea of owning my own cupcakery and making gourmet cupcakes. And last but not least, I love the idea of traveling to different places in the world and studying how other cultures live and how to improve them.
What are some other career options I could have? And what should I major in when I go to college for these careers? Do I have a good chance of making a good salary? I'm not expecting to be super rich!I am 17 and I have no clue what I want as a career!?
Find a small town with a high school. Then set up a bakery. The bakery at my town gets bank. And after a few years you can hire employees and travel the world.

GUYS - what do you think of this birthday present? Advice needed!?
For my boyfriend's 23rd birthday I am planning on:
- cooking him a homemade dinner
- buying a box of gourmet cupcakes
- buying him dj hero for PS3 (he likes making beats on the computer, so I thought he might like to play around with this after work to wind down or what not, or at parties)
- and obviously just spend the night with him and have a great time :)
Is that good? Too much or not enough? I just want him to have a nice evening,GUYS - what do you think of this birthday present? Advice needed!?
Its a really cute idea. Comes straight from the heart.. and if hes a good guy, he will realize that and love you even more for it. Good for you! Happy bday to him. Hope its great
It is the thought that counts!
If you feel he is worthy of all of those gestures, then so be it...let him enjoy all of them.
Gift giving is hard to say anything about.
Some people would say do not give gifts if it puts you too much in a financial bind.
That is what your brain will say.
However your heart will say there is no price tag to love.
So work with both mind and heart to make the decision that sounds right for you.GUYS - what do you think of this birthday present? Advice needed!?

Bringing a gift while submitting a resume?
My roommate is looking for a job, and she got an application from a store today. She told me that when she turns in her resume, she's going to give the manager gourmet cupcakes and cookies (which she gets from her current job at a specialty bakery). I told her she might want to wait on that, because the people at the new job might feel a bit weird about hiring someone who is bringing them a gift. I thought it might even come across as unprofessional. What do you think? I'm actually just curious about this because it got me thinking about what's appropriate when job-hunting.Bringing a gift while submitting a resume?
That would not be appropriate. It could be seen as a bribe, and possibly even keep her from getting the job.
I agree with the answerer above. This is highly inappropriate. Her CV/Resume should do the taking, not resorting to bribes. Very bad etiquette.Bringing a gift while submitting a resume?
No way. It looks like she is sucking up to them.
I have never heard of someone doing this before and don't believe it is appropriate.
Tell your stupid pathetic friend that it will be seen for what it is, an obvious bribe!
That's pretty lame. It will probably hurt her chances more than help them.

How do I be the supportive girlfriend instead of the high maintnenence one?
My boyfriend is finishing grad school this semester and he's really busy and really stressed. I miss him because we don't hang out as much and when we do he's just talking about his stress. I want to show him that I support him and that I understand and not be the whiny girl who's trying to demand more of his time.
I am usually really good at this, I want to do something nice for him and I'm out of ideas. I've already done the thoughtful card, the gourmet cupcakes, and the french maid costume with dinner. Tomorrow I'm helping him rake the leaves at his house. I don' t know what else I can do, any ideas?
We have only been dating a few months, but we're both 27 so it's gotten pretty serious pretty fast, HELP!How do I be the supportive girlfriend instead of the high maintnenence one?
Look, i aint being smutty but you know what the best stress reliever is!
The best thing you can do is give him the space he needs to finish his schooling. I know it sucks but it will be worth it once he gets his degree. Until then, be sweet and don't ask him for anything. Don't get mad at him when he says he can't hang out.How do I be the supportive girlfriend instead of the high maintnenence one?
Try not to talk about the stressors around him. Get his mind off of that!!
Raking leaves could be fun:
Who can rake the most...
Leaf fight.
Who can build the tallest pile of leaves..
I know this sounds like kid stuff... but it could be just the thing for him to losen up and have fun!!
After raking you could get some hot coco and watch a movie!!
Good Luck....
just try and be supportive for him also just talk to him about how hes feeling and try to show that you fully understand and tell him you're always there for him if he needs to talk, hope that helps..x
clean his house or wash his car or do his laundry or dishes. sounds like he's got no time on his hands so remove all the little stresses so he can stay focused on the big important stuff like school. taking away the small stuff might help him relax, and then the maid outfit could come in handy again ;]
I would say #1 don't make it so SERIOUS. Let you be the fun in his life. When he asks you to marry him then make it serious.
Don't think about yourself so much. Life is too short.
Becca it sounds to me like you're already doing it and dont know it. Keep doing what you're doing!! Be yourself and everything else will fall in place. Im sure thats all he asks is that you help out where/when its needed. But also let him know that if you scratch his back you expect him to return the favor and scratch your back every now and then.
In otha words, dont constantly help him out, and go outta your way to make his life easier and you're not reaping any benefits from it. Right is right and fair is fair. Whatever you do, dont let him take advantage of your kindness and come to expect it.
Just chill a bit. Honestly. You sound like a nice person, and I have no doubt that you mean very well, but you don't need to be planning activities like a cruise ship entertainment director. Lay off the program; he probably just needs to relax without feeling like he has to appreciate all the nicey-nicey things you've done, or that he is going to have to participate in some little theatre production. It's good that you can be there, just to listen to him vent about his stresses - that is a huge part of his life right now, and honestly, you are not getting a true picture of who he is, and how you interact, and what kind of a relationship you will have under normal circumstances. Chill, let him talk, eat some healthy and nutritious food together, and relax. By doing all these little programs, that actually makes it seem as though you are making demands on him to be the ever-appreciative audience for your strenuous endeavors, instead of just being a source of support. Helping rake the leaves is a %26gt;wonderful%26lt; idea, and just cheerfully helping out with any necessary chore is your best bet, and that will go the farthest towards showing your support. Don't rush things, because this time will pass quickly enough. You still have plenty of time.
If he has the time and needs a break, take him somewhere that he enjoys like a concert or other event. If he's really stressed out because of the school-crunch, try helping him out in ways that take other stress off of his life. Things like taking care of food or laundry etc. It's not sexist, sometimes the other person just has to pick up a little extra slack when times get tough. If he isn't appreciative, he might be a really nice guy etc, just too busy for a real relationship. If that's the case, it might be a good idea to chill out for a little while.
don't get this serious..
just have fun with ur life and u will always have guys pursuing you...
don't worry of your age...
n please stop getting all these ideas...
if he really cares for u ... he will have to have some time for you..
don't be so easy to get...
he should be working hard to be with u even if he is working 25 hours a day...in order for marriage to happen..
let him show some interest in you...
no one likes a mother who will do things for him like cooking and helping around with the other house cores.. at least when u are still dating..
so be carefree n fun to be with...
that's it.. and have a busy life of your own..
be a dream girl not a doormat who is always available...
